Fire safety is the part nobody sees. Until the one day it decides everything.

On the 28th of November 1942, a nightclub in Boston called the Cocoanut Grove caught fire. It was over capacity. Several exits were dressed to look like walls, for atmosphere. The main way out was a single revolving door, and it jammed within minutes under the weight of everyone trying to leave at once.

492 people died — more than the building's legal occupancy in the first place. It remains one of the deadliest single-building fires in US history.

What came out of it wasn't only grief. It was code. Panic hardware on exit doors. Restrictions on flammable decoration. Rules on which way an exit door swings. Occupant load tied to enforceable exit capacity — language that still sits inside fire codes today, UAE and KSA included.
